Lionfish Hunting in Cozumel

While invasive lionfish are a terrible problem, we are excited that the word is getting out about the massive problem lionfish are causing in the Western Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Consequently, Cozumel has largely gotten the invasion under control but the island still needs our help to hunt lionfish and keep the damage they are doing to our underwater world to a minimum.

- I am happy to announce that Kelly Ash, current president of the World Lionfish Hunters Association (WLHA), will be assuming the role of Executive Director when I officially step down on July 1, 2014. 

It's been a lot of fun and I've enjoyed working with a very passionate and committed WLHA membership. I am excited about the energy and innovation Kelly will bring to the executive leadership of this growing organization we found two and a half years ago. The WLHA is fortunate to have him at the helm now.

This is serious stuff and it REALLY DOES affect us all, regardless of how far away you live from the Western Atlantic Basin. This is NOT a diving issue, this is a world issue and involves food security for 100's of millions of people.

Lionfish are a problem because they are destroying native marine fisheries that are ecologically, commercially, traditionally and recreationally necessary.

Over 42 million people directly rely on the reefs in the Caribbean Sea and Latin America for their livelihood. Diving alone is a $2.1 billion dollar economy in the Caribbean.

What happens when the reef dies due to the additional pressures caused by invasive lionfish?
